Cool and Cosy
Linen is made from the hollow fibres of the flax plant, which is both naturally breathable and remarkably insulating. It offers excellent temperature regulation no matter the climate, and thus a great option for both warm and cool sleepers.
Light, airy and naturally eco-friendly, the breezy fabric’s unique texture only gets better with time.
Linen is produced from flax plants, which is notable for its durable and enduring properties. As a naturally insulating fibre, it does a great job of retaining warmth in the winter and providing natural breathability during warmer seasons. It has a wonderfully supple texture and has earned its reputation over the centuries as a fresh and breezy alternative to cotton.
Flax grows relatively quickly and is thus less taxing on natural resources, water and energy (compared to cotton). Linen is also biodegradable, making it a more sustainable fibre. At Cuddledown, all our bedding is OEKO-TEX® certified which ensures it’s free of harmful chemicals, and is sustainably and ethically woven by a BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) member.
Both linen and cotton are naturally derived plant fibres. Linen has a wonderfully textured look and feel - casual enough for just popping onto your bed (ironing is optional). Cotton has a choice of weaves (sateen or percale), each which offers a unique look and feel. We’d pick linen for its durability and breezy and textured feel, and cotton for its wider range of weaving options.
Judging your bedding based on thread-count would be a misnomer; the characteristics of a good fabric comes down to the quality of the yarn and the sourcing and manufacturing process (and a whole bunch more). The thread-counts are often misrepresented as there is no rule for defining it - some companies will sneakily multiply the ply (of which each thread contains multiples of this) by the threads to artificially inflate the number; read our bedding guide here for more details on our fabric.
Linen has a comparatively lower thread-count than cotton as their fibres are naturally more broadly spaced. But fret not, as its natural softness is plentiful thanks to the unique composition of flax fibres. And, it’ll only get softer with time, wash after wash.
